『OpenSolaris Bible』翻訳プロジェクト

大久保です。
先週、Solaris Innovation Forum 2009 へ行ってきました。
瀧さんの講演を聞くのと、直接お話したかったからですが、幸運にもコミュニティの皆さんとも昼食に同席することができました。
特に直接お会いして聞きたかったのは、これから自分が翻訳で OpenSolaris に貢献するにあたって、どこに力を入れるかの方向性に関する意見と、『OpenSolaris Bible』の翻訳を考えているが、どう思うかということでした。
Web や wiki の翻訳に関しては、「読みたいものは色々ある」とのことで、逆に多すぎて絞り込めないような印象を受けました。
『OpenSolaris Bible』の翻訳に関しては、加藤さんたちも加わり、廊下で立ち話になってしまいました。
その大ざっぱな内容は、
○著作権なら著者たちは Sun 社員なので問題ないだろう。
○出版社では技○評○社かオ○イ○ージャパン。太田さんがつてがある。
○やるとしたら誰が訳すか。加藤さんが以前 Jim に持ちかけられ、私の名を出している。
○出版社から出ている本なので電子媒体でばらまくことや出版前に開示することはできない。
○少なくとも１年以上かかるプロジェクトになる。
加藤さんには以前「シスアドは全て読むべき本」とか書き込んでいたじゃないですか、と突っ込みを入れましたが、日本人技術者に読んでもらうには、日本語にしなきゃ駄 目ですよね。
結局、瀧さんも加藤さんも「日本語で読みたい」と言ってくれました。
そこでこれの実現可能性を探ってみたいのです。
１）出版関連は出版社に知り合いのいる人が話を持っていけばできそうです。
２）著者たちに連絡をとるのは Jim にやってもらえるとうれしいです。
３）翻訳・発行の権利を誰が持つのかということに関しては、以前モルさんがおっしゃっていたように成果物はコミュニティに帰属することでいいと思います。
４）内容の検査（翻訳の査読ではなく内容が間違っていないか）は有識者・エバンジェリストにお願いできればと思います。
５）方針討論・進捗報告は g11n-discuss の会議室で逐次行うのがいいと思います。
６）翻訳の進め方としては前記会議室に章ごとの翻訳予約をして、翻訳が終わればチェッカーと出版社に送る、でしょうか。
７）誰が翻訳するか、ということに関しては、章ごとに分担して皆で総掛かり、というのが理想ですが、誰もやらなくても私一人でもやる気はあります。
余談ですが、もし出版社の厚意に甘えられれば、門外不出を条件にびぎなーず勉強会の教材に使用させてもらうことも考えています。
これが実現すれば、勉強会とともに内容チェック、文章の分かりやすさチェックが同時にできます。

I have visited "Solaris Innovation Forum 2009" last week in the hope to see Mr. Taki.
Lucky I've got chance to sit with OpenSolaris Community members too.
My eagerness was that I wanted to ask opinion about on contributing to OpenSolaris as translator, what materials are most efficient to translate, and the opinion about translating "OpenSolaris Bible".
Regarding Web and wiki pages, Mr. Taki said, "There are many materials I want to read in Japanese." It sounds as "It is difficult to point out few materials as there are many of these."
Regarding the translation of "OpenSolaris Bible", discussion started including Mr. Kato and others. In brief,
- There may be no problem in getting approval of authors since they are Sun employee.
- Gijyutsu Hyoronsha or O'Reily Japan are candidate for publisher. Mr. Ota has connection with them.
- Who are going to translate. Mr. Kato has mentioned my name to Jim.
- Due to copyright, the translated materials cannot open publicly.
- It may take at least 1 year for this project.
I told Mr. Kato that you have ever written in this forum that "all system admin should read this book." It is necessary to translate into Japanese if we wish Japanese engineer to read it.
After all, Mr. Taki as well as Mr. Kato said that it is worth material to translate.
Now I would like to see the feasibility of this project.
1. For publication, anybody who has connection with publisher could manage it.
2. For contacting the authors, I am happy if Jim could take this task.
3. Regarding the copyright of product, I agree to Mol san that all reproduction of material will belong to OpenSolaris Community.
4. For checking the contents (Not the review of translation), I am appreciated if OpenSolaris Evangelists take part on it.
5. We can discuss the task schedule and progress report at g11n-discuss forum.
6. For progress management, we can post translation reservation at the above forum. When translation of each section is done, we can send the result to reviewer and publisher.
7. It is ideal to share the translation by all. If this is not achieved, I am ready to translate single handed.
Apart from it, if the Japanese publisher agrees, we might use translated materials for the study of novice with the condition of non-disclosure.
If it is done, we can do review of the contents at the same time.
Wait for your opinion.

Hi ... I know the authors and I'm happy to email them to introduce you.
I don't know what the publisher has in mind for getting the book
translated into other languages, but I'm sure the authors can make those
connections quite easily. Shall I send some email off list and cc you?

Yes, I think that is the best way if you could introduce us to authors, and if authors ask the will of publisher.

塚本です。
"OpenSolaris Bible"の件、原本をお借りしておきながら
いまだ手付かずで大変申し訳ございません。
びぎなーずも、現在は個人ががんばる方式になってしまっておりますが
軌道に乗り次第、参考書籍の読書会的なことも始めていければと
思っています。
その際の有力候補としては、既刊の「OpenSolarisスタート
アップバイブル」もありますが
是非「OpenSolaris Bible」を活用出来ればと思っています。
翻訳に関しては、英語力も乏しく
どこまでお力になれるかは分かりませんが
出来る事は可能な限りやりたいと思っております。

ご返事ありがとうございます。
翻訳そのものに加え、多数やらなければならないことがあります。例えば、
○本が出版されるまでに陳腐化ないし更新された内容を調べて注として追加する。例えば今回リリースされた2009.06の新機能で紹介されているCrossBowに 対する言及があります。
○「ソース」で示されている参照リンクはすべて英語だが、それに相当する日本語リンクのリストを作成する。
○表現の統一。これは斉藤さんにSun資産の翻訳メモリをいただければありがたいです。
○きちんとしたプロジェクト管理。やり方はいろいろありますが、一部のオープンソースプロジェクトのように、プロジェクトを開始したものの、そのまま中途で立ち消え にならないように、各人の進捗報告や問題を取りまとめ、適度なところに依頼すべきものは依頼するなど。
やりましょう、と言ってくれると元気になります。

「やりましょう」:-)

まだ，OpenSolaris Bible を入手すらしていないのですが(^^;
個人的には，original にこだわらず「これが現時点での堅実な使い方」
みたいなのを啓蒙するあたりが一つの仕事かなと思っているので，そういった
所に合流できるのであれば何かのお手伝いとかもできるかもしれませんけれど．
日本語の本が増えるのはとても嬉しいことだと思います．
日本語版からの feedback で oiginal も KAIZEN^H^H^HTEI されるような
scheme があったら，とっても発展的で楽しいですね．:-]

出版権（俗に言う版権）についてもご注意下さいませ．
出版時の契約形態にもよりますが，原本で出版権設定契約等がなされている
場合には，版元にも訳本出版の同意を取らねばならない筈です．
（出版社は自社の権利を守りたいので，何らかの物を設定していると思います）
"OpenSolaris BIble" だと，John Wiley & Sons みたいですね．
著作権管理は，出版社に対して翻訳，翻案等の代理権を設定している場合もあ
ろかと思います．基本的には，John Wiley & Sons に照会をかけるのが第一で
はないかなと．
詳細は，日本側の出版社が定まれば，そこに取り次ぎをやって貰う事もできよ
うかと思います．また，出版関係者の方が法的問題については詳しいので，
そうした所のコーディネイトを最大限に活用するのも一手段ですね．:-)

アドバイスをありがとうございます。
現在までの進捗をみなさんにもお伝えします。
Jim が早速著者たちに連絡をとり、私を紹介してくれました。
著者のNicholas Solter さんが米国出版元 Wiley の Relliott 氏への紹介状を書いてくれました。
Relliott 氏が海外担当であるかどうかはわからないのですが、とりあえず Wiley が対応できるかどうか、照会しているところです。
Jim has contacted to authors and introduced me to them. (thanks!)
Mr. Nicholas Solter has introduced me to Mr. Relliott of Wiley.
We are not sure whether Mr. Relliott is appropriate person for this project, but I asked him if Wiley can accept this idea.

Wiley の Relliott 氏から海外翻訳担当の Grosso 氏に紹介してもらい、最終的に次の回答をもらいました。

進捗報告が遅れました。
加藤さんが ASCII に、太田さんが技術評論社に連絡をとってくれました。
どちらも「検討します」とのことですが、道は険しそうです。
ASCII が
1年以上かけて出して、古くなってしまわないかが心配
デーモン本を翻訳した実績からみても、1000ページを超える翻訳書を読者が納得できる値段でだすのは、なかなか難しい
というコメントをくれました。
後は待つだけですか。
