Project Proposal: Country/Language Portals for

Project Proposal: Country/Language Portals for opensolaris.org
I propose a project on opensolaris.org for the creation of country/language portals for the website. Having opensolaris.org talk in a variety of languages is critical for engaging developers in non English-speaking regions of the world. I will help lead the effort initially, but I'm very much seeking additional leaders who have more expertise than I have. Which shouldn't be difficult, actually. We've been having some initial conversations for a couple of weeks internally and on the Internationalization & Localization Community discuss list: http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=15327&tstart=0
In short, the OpenSolaris website team will provide infrastructure access to top level domains (jp.opensolaris.org, cn.opensolaris.org, etc) for the purpose of translating the site, and the Country/Language Portal Project will create and manage the process of who translates and maintains the site via the various portals. There is already significant interest from Japan, Korea, and India, so if you'd like to get involved please stay tuned for our project opening. For more background, see the thread above. The conversation there is ongoing, and your participation is most welcome.
I'm seeking seconds for the proposal, community participation in the project, and an endorsement from the leaders of the Internationalization & Localization Community. I'd like to tie the project as closely to that community as possible and use their lists as well. This only makes sense since the community members on those lists have the most expertise and interest in this area. So, for now, all we need is a project space. We'll have conversations on i18n-discuss to get going, and when individual portals are ready they can split off into existing lists within that community. If we have to create new lists, we can certainly do so when the need arises.
That's it.

Sorry, I don't have wiki to offer. But I hope you get involved anyway. Having the site in multiple language could change the dynamic of the community significantly as we engage more people.

Sure. The wiki was a long shot anyway! :)

I'm confused - the OpenSolaris site is already a wiki right now? - only it has more restricted access rights than your typical wiki environment.

True. It does allow you to edit pages from within the browser.
The main problem is that unlike most wikis nowadays, it does not support revision control. That makes it tough to open up access rights because there is no way to revert vandalized pages back to older revisions. We are essentially stuck with having a restricted set of people with edit privileges for each page.

Hi ... The site infrastructure will stay as it is for these portals and will be managed from a technical perspective just as the main site is. Each portal group, however, will have to build a little community around their own translation efforts. They and their leaders will determine who does the actual translations, who gets access, etc since they are the closest to their given areas. The foundation for that is really already set up within the globalization community. We'll need to flush some of this out when the project is formed. Much work to do, but the framework is already established. I'll be continuing these conversations on the i18n discuss list.

Excellent! I sort of expected that China would be a big part of this project. Welcome! You guys are leaving everyone in the dust with your OpenSolaris university program, so having a Chinese opensolaris.org should only help. Cool ....

Hi Jim,
I18n community would like to endorse this project. Please let me know when the project has been set up, so that I can update the I18n community website with endorsed project list.
I like the idea to use existing i18n mailing lists for the country portal project until the project teams see the need to create separate ones explicitly for country portal development discussion in the future. I'll also try to help in the Korean community and other areas.
best regards, Young

Ok, cool. I think we have more than enough lists. No need to create new ones for this function.
