Portals Leaders List

Here are the names of the people who have asserted interest in working on the various portals. I just picked through the various threads of conversation we've been having. If I've missed anyone let me know, and add the names in this thread. Also, if these people listed here are interested in bringing in additional leaders to their portal project, I think that's fine. So, if there are no objections, I'll add these names to the project page space as leaders.
I think we still need to iron out more of the leadership model we intend to implement. I'll take what I've written already and flush it out a bit more for discussion
-- Jim
Current Portal Leaders:
Brazil: br.opensolaris.org Leaders: Thiago Sobral, Pablo Costa
China: cn.opensolaris.org Leader: Joey Guo
France: fr.opensolaris.org Leader: Laurent Blume

Japan: jp.opensolaris.org Leader: Fumihiko Iwabuchi
Korea: ko.opensolaris.org Leader: Jay Lee
Russia: ru.opensolaris.org Leader: Victor Latushkin
Spain: es.opensolaris.org Leader: Luis Mayoral
Still Up for Grabs from the original proposed list:
* Netherlands nl.opensolaris.org * Germany de.opensolaris.org * Italy it.opensolaris.org

Oh, I see what happened. He pinged me off-list and I thought it was on-list. Sorry. I asked him to chime in here.

Hi all,
First, sorry about all I will write, but I have my own thoughts. Like I said in others threads (i18n/education forum), I dont like opensolaris-br.org members. I made a vow to myself never work with opensolaris-br.org members. Why? Simple, all the members of opensolaris-br.org that I have been meeting would never honor their words. We need support of people who want to engage in this project. If Opensolaris-br.org group join it, I prefer to get out of "br portal project" and go on alone. I just want help people who have intersting in Solaris/OpenSolaris OS. Like I said, if this portal do not grow fast, I belive Opensolaris will never grow up in Brazil, other words, this project is the last shot to Opensolaris in Brazil.
again sorry about my words, but I need to say
regards pablo costa

Hi, Pablo. Well, I think they'd like to be involved just as you'd like to be involved. And a project like this could help bring people together, don't you think? I'm new to this community, so I'm not necessarily aware of all the issues that have gone on before but I think we can work this out. Let's take it off line and deal with it.
Best,

Hi Jim,
I understand you Jim, but I know what Im saying. I agree with you when you said the project need many people as possible. We will need all people work together ,but I also know with opensolaris-br.org we can not do a good work. Will just wast of time. I cant trust. If Opensolaris-br will join in br.opensolaris.br project and others projects, I dont wanna join the project, I will help in other way.

Ok, let's take this issue off-list at this point since it doesn't involve the others. I'm sending private mail to all involved right now to see if we can work this out.

Here's an updated list of the current portals leaders:
Current Proposed OpenSolaris Portal Leaders:
Brazil: br.opensolaris.org Leaders: Thiago Sobral, Pablo Costa, Dimas Oliveira
China: cn.opensolaris.org Leader: Joey Guo
Czech: cs.opensolaris.org Leader: Martin Cerveny
France: fr.opensolaris.org Leader: Laurent Blume
India: in.opensolaris.org Leader: Suresh Chandrasekharan
Japan: jp.opensolaris.org Leader: Fumihiko Iwabuchi
Korea: ko.opensolaris.org Leader: Jay Lee
Poland: pl.opensolaris.org Leader: Michal Nowak
Russia: ru.opensolaris.org Leader: Victor Latushkin
Spain: es.opensolaris.org Leader: Luis Mayoral
No leaders assigned for these countries from the original list:
Netherlands nl.opensolaris.org Germany de.opensolaris.org Italy it.opensolaris.org
Any others interested in participating? Any additional country portals?
I have some additional information regarding the portals. We are currently testing one portal and will offer a portal to each country (above) soon -- hopefully in a couple of weeks. To start, each portal will actually be a project on opensolaris.org and will live within that project space. However the project spaces for the portals has been altered to look like the front page of opensolaris.org. The portal URLs will simply act as redirects to the project spaces during this initial phase. More longer term: we are evaluating new content management systems that will support a fully internationalized site, so for now the portals will act as the beginning phase to give people access to content to get started on translations.

This is great and congratulations!
BTW, most of the portal domain names start with ISO 3166 based two-letter territory codes but some (cs and ko not CZ and KR) are ISO 639 based two-letter language codes. Were they intentional?

Hi ...
Do they all need to be the same? If so, we can correct it. Initially, we started with only country-specific names, but some people wanted language-specific names, and so I've been trying to satisfy as many people as possible. However, if all the address need to be based on one standard, we should address this. Perhaps Derek can give some advice from the website perspective.

I don't have any strong opinion on this and this is something each portal folks/owners should decide for their portals but people could be confused if they know about this language/territory codes as I would try to, for instance, access cz.opensolaris.org or kr.opensolaris.org if I see the pattern of many other territory codes being used.

I don't have a strong opinion on going with countries only or languages only as well. In fact, at this point, when I listen to arguments for each position, I see value in each position. So, that's why I like the idea of mixing them -- as long as the standards don't conflict and as long as there are no technical conflicts with the site as the portals grow. And both of those questions are unanswered right now, so we really can't move forward until they are. I think we need to have this conversation on this list so this community can decide what the consensus is since we'll be living in this all the time. Then we can talk to the website team to determine what the technical issues are and if they have any dependencies for us to consider.
So, Countries? Languages? Mixed? And reasons.
Sound good?

Perhaps having aliases for such language code using portals (and the other way too) might be an idea. Again, I don't have any strong opinion on this.

Hi Jim, Ienup and all,
Let us think again about what the "portal" is.
The portal must be accessible, easy to read, easy to understand, easy to contribute and easy to communicate each other for OpenSolaris users and developers to improve OpenSolaris and market it.
The portal should be written in a certain language.
> So, Countries? Languages? Mixed? And reasons.
Mixed? No, I don't think so. It's confusing and ..... For example, "Mixed" means that both ja.opensolaris.org and jp.opensolaris.org can exist at the same time. ja.opensolaris.org is to provide information in Japanese. jp.opensolaris.org is to provide information for users and developers in Japan Now we have, for example, American users and Korean users in Japan. Would jp.opensolaris.org provide information in Korean, in English and in Japanese etc.? If they do, those information duplicates.
Countries? No, I don't think it's a good idea. For example, think about India. In what language is india.opensolaris.org written? Hindi?, Urdu?, Kannada? and more ... :) Or india.opensolaris.org provides information in all languages spoken in India?
Language? Yes, I think so. We can be consistent. I have been working for OpenOffice.org. For example we added Gascon. http://development.openoffice.org/releases/2.1.0rc2.html "Gascon is now a locale that even can be choosen in Calc and as default language for documents" :) What if Gascon users and developers want to join OpenSolaris and set up their portal?
OpenSolaris is an OS. OpenOffice.org is an Office Suite. They are different. But they are OpenSource Software (OSS) Community. In terms of community management OpenSolaris can learn something from OpenOffice.org.
Thanks, khirano

Ok, I agree.

yes, this is possible, and yes, it can be confusing.
> ja.opensolaris.org is to provide information in Japanese.
Ok.
> jp.opensolaris.org is to provide information for users and developers in > Japan
Sure, but in the case of Japan the majority of Japanese people in the world live in Japan. Can't jp serve both purposes? And if the leaders of the jp portal don't serve the Japanese people around the world well enough, what's wrong with someone else, say in San Francisco's Japantown, starting up ja for a little competition? Can it be confusing? Sure. But I don't think it has to be a conflict.
> Now we have, for example, American users and Korean users in Japan.
> Would jp.opensolaris.org provide information in Korean, in English and > in Japanese etc.?
Well ... Americans generally speak English as their first language and Koreans generally speak Korean and neither system solves this problem. There would have to be people who are bi-lingual in this case to mediate. There are painfully few American OpenSolaris developers here in Japan, but there are probably a few more Koreans, though. So, how does a language-only based system solve this problem? ja would be just as difficult for Americans and Koreans in Japan as jp would. Both jp and ja are for Japanese people, not English-speaking Americans or Koreans. We can't solve all problems with this, I agree, but we are trying to solve as many as we can knowing full well that it's not perfect.
> If they do, those information duplicates.
I'm perfectly happy to have information duplicate and fork. You can't stop it, so why try?
> Countries? No, I don't think it's a good idea. > For example, think about India. > In what language is india.opensolaris.org written? > Hindi?, Urdu?, Kannada? and more ... :) > Or india.opensolaris.org provides information in all languages spoken in > India?
Yes, I think India would be a good language-based portal.
> Language? Yes, I think so. We can be consistent.
Consistent, yes, but to the exception of someone who may have a good argument for a country based portal.

Cool. I have no clue what that is. :) But, personally speaking, I'd be happy to engage them. As long as they didn't preclude others from making their own choices as well. I'll have to look that one up. :)
> OpenSolaris is an OS. OpenOffice.org is an Office Suite. They are > different. > But they are OpenSource Software (OSS) Community. > In terms of community management OpenSolaris can learn something from > OpenOffice.org.
And thanks for this. OpenOffice has certainly been out there way longer than we have, so I want to learn from them. Are all of the native languages on oo.o based on language and none on countries? Also, how do they handle the infrastructure. Are they all hosted on the same machines or distributed across the geos?
Thanks,

Mixed!
I did opted for country name, however for Japan only. And obviously not much can be said for other countries and/or language. I also know people do argue to have language name for Japan as well. And I think, language/cotunry name issue aren't blank and white answer. As Jim noted, both side has pros/cons.
What is the this new so called language portal? Who need it for what purpose? Who would visit the site? My take on this in case of Japan/Japanese are:
o For people in Japan (location), since it would be nice to have site mentioning local event and such. Since majority of people live in Japan's primary language are Japanse, site should written in Japanese. But not just translation of English site.
o For people who do speak Japanese. While site primary target are people in Japan, but majority of contents are Japanese and mostly translation, site should still attractive to people who's live out side of Japan and primary language are Japanese.
I'm sure we can argue which point in above are more important to another, but say above are reason to choose "jp" over "ja" in this case. This however, imply that primary language for vast majority of people who live in Japan are Japanese. And Japanese language variation are almost non existing to people who live out side of Japan (actually there are quite variation within the Japan, but that is different topic).
While many other language/country combination may have similar situation/characterics, I believe there are also many other cases exist. For example,
o (country) Canada. Is it French or English?
In case of www.sun.com (and www.ibm.com), they provide both. ca.sun.com/en ca.sun.com/fr.
o (language) Spanish. Where? Mexico? Spain? or elsewhere?
I believe this is why "locale" naming are such that combination of language and country .. (for exmaple, ja_JP, fr_CA). Going just one way to another would require lots of resource to prepare all possible cases which I do not think we can able to support. So, I would think this should be case by cases.

My option: Languages 1) the "browser language" preference can be used to redirect to right language 2) like some other portals: cs.openoffice.org (http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html) cs.wikipedia.org, cs.wikibooks.org, cs.opensuse.org 3) we try to build two portals cs.opensolaris.org => _translation_ of the OS original project (the same text, navigation and design) for developers www.opensolaris.cz => own portal that covers specific needs to czech community with focus on users and/or administrators (combined information from opensolaris, bigadmin, blueprints, swforums, edu ... and own sources news, FAQs and HOWTOs) M.C>

Hi Jim, I have an idea.
Ciao Giacomo and Marco
Are you aware of anyone who could be nominated for the leader of the Italian portal at it.opensolaris.org?
Please feel free to look at the http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=18670 at your earliest convenience.
Grazie, arrivederci.

Martin,
We are trying to do actually the same - two portals: the 1st one for the translated documentation and the 2nd for a wiki and other things. I spent too much money on all of those opensolaris.* domains, and now they're trying to put me out of the business. :D
Or maybe, is this possible to add a ServerAlias for language portals? Like opensolaris.it and www.opensolaris.it -> it.opensolaris.org, etc, etc. No, I am not interested in redirects of any kind. That would be also a solution. Jim, answer, will you?
And yes, absolutely languages, some folks (e.g: just mentioned wikipedia) are successful with this solution, why don't we learn from them?

Hi ... answer what? :) I'm sorry but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be answering here.

Would you find a mixed environment ok or would you prefer that we mandate only languages or only countries? I see good arguments on both sides. In other words, if we can get languages added to the mix, would we then have to remove the countries?

Ah, sorry for being not specific. This is kinda technical question. Will you consider a possibility of adding extra domains for language portals (aka ServerAlias)? Some of us already have domains under our countries TLDs (e.g.: Martin said they have opensolairs.cz). I am sure some of us are not going to build an another portal over there, so it would be great to point domains back to the portal. As I said before redirects are definitely NOT what I am looking for, as this will definitely degrade position of a country domain.

Ok, lemme come again on this.
Mixed environment as it is said before would confuse only. What language will you set as a default one for in.opensolaris.org (India)?
Michal
