Virtual Box - next hot virtualization solution (?)

It had been just a couple of days back that I downloaded Virtual Box sources to build on OpenSolaris and below piece of news arrives.
Sun has bought Virtual Box: http://blogs.sun.com/barton808/entry/sun_grabs_virtualbox
Interesting aspects about Virtual Box: 1. It is a native virtualization and full virtualization meaning it allows an unmodified guest OS to run (unlike xVM/Xen on OpenSolaris) 2. It has been available under dual license - open source and commercial 3. Finally the reason that got me interested - It probably is one solution supporting widest array of host operating systems (including OpenSolaris based platforms) (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads)

Correction. xVM/Xen also allows unmodified Guest OSes to run like Windows in hardware assisted virtualization mode that uses the AMDV and IntelVT processor extensions. We have successfully run WinXP/Vista on xVM.

However Virtualbox is a beast apart! It is completely painless to install and use with intuitive GUI, high performance and stable, supports an array of Guest OSes. We just tried various stuff with Virtualbox running on SXDE host OS without any issues. In addition Virtualbox can also utilize the processor extensions alluded to above.
BTW it uses Qt :) I am Hoping we will soon see Qt bundled in SXDE/Indiana.
Regards, Moinak.

Wow.. I was unable to build VirtualBox because the kbuild environment wouldn't set up correctly on my (installed at that time) build 68.
Does it build out of the box now ? Has anyone on the list built it ?

I have not built it, but you can grab the Solaris binary package from here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Sriram,
Have just started pulling down vbox via svn. I'm going to attempt to build this on SXDE 9/07 (Still waiting for my SXDE 1/08 to arrive!).
Take a look at: http://blogs.sun.com/JoeBonasera/entry/using_the_virtualbox_hypervisor_on for build instructions.

I just tried Indiana Preview 2 with Virtualbox and Windows host, and the network didn't work. I might not have the Virtualbox networking configured properly though; it doesn't make as much sense to me as the Vmware networking setup.

Aah, that would be nice! Have not seen the VirtualBox sources. Do they compile Qt statically into it? Which version of Qt is used by Virtual Box?

$ ls -ld /opt/VirtualBox/qtgcc/lib/libqt-mt.so lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 39 Feb 13 11:37 /opt/VirtualBox/qtgcc/lib/libqt-mt.so -> /opt/VirtualBox/qtgcc/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
BTW, I like this thing. Its a 20 MB bundle that does full virtualization with VT/SVM support and has a nice Qt GUI :-). Was able to get Fedora Core 8 and Nexenta CP 1.0 running in a matter of minutes !

And fast too. Mandriva 2008 DVD installed and booted in 20mins flat without using VT extensions! We had to tweak the Xorg settings a little to get the GUI however.
It seems that the optimised VirtualBox X11 video and mouse drivers in the svn trunk have been updated to support Solaris as well. These drivers allow optimised video performance and seamless mouse access without the virtual machine capturing the mouse pointer.
In addition the SVN trunk code also allows seamless VM operation with Solaris as the host OS. See this blog to get what I mean: http://blogs.sun.com/tpm/entry/virtualbox
Windows Media player running in JDS desktop ...
Another blog showing Windows XP running in seamless mode on MacOSX http://blogs.sun.com/stevewilson/entry/this_isn_t_your_dad

Cool, must give Virtual Box a try? I guess it must be a tad slower than xen. How does its performance compare with VMWare?

As I mentioned before. Lot faster than Xen. Almost like running on bare metal!

Hyperbole !? But many people have reported the better performance that it offers as compared to many other virtualization solutions. BTW, comparison with VMware and parallels is available at http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VBox_vs_Others

I am not exaggerating. I will have VBox running on a ThinkPad at this BOSUG meet.
