Compiz problem

Hi.

Ever since I have enabled advanced visual effects on my laptop it hangs as soon as I boot. I have given a detailed account of the problem here:

http://noviceopensolaris.blogspot.com/2008/06/opensolaris-advanced-compiz-effects.html

In short - I am not able to start my desktop. With the gdm disabled I can work with console but I cannot uninstall or disable compiz in disabled gdm state.

The problem has surfaced since I enabled compiz. So can i revert to the default setting using console.
If not,
I propose a small start-up script that will disable compiz as soon as the gdm starts.

Please see if you can help.

Thanks.

Select "failsafe terminal" as your session in GDM, and run
gnome-appearance-preferences in the xterm. You can then disable Compiz
without digging through the GConf tree by hand.

Oops, I meant "gnome-appearance-properties".

Hello trisk.

As you suggested I did gnome-appearance-properties in the xterm using failsafe session in GDM.

I got the desktop settings window where I could adjust visual effects. I reset the settings as default. But when I exit this session and log on to the GDM desktop, it again opens with the advanced visual effects and hangs immediately!

Any ways thanks a lot for the suggestion. Do you have any other guess? I am nearly out of patience now.. thinking of formating and reinstalling.

Please can any one report this problem to any core team member? There must be a way out...

Thanks.
Jay Mahadeokar.

If you do not mind losing all your GNOME customizations (which you won't
given that you are considering reinstall) then do this:
Login via failsafe and run /usr/bin/gnome-cleanup.

Moinak.

Hey Moinak!

Thanks a lot! It has worked.(Login via failsafe and run /usr/bin/gnome-cleanup.) And finally after three days of frustration I can now log on to my opensolaris desktop!

BTW can you suggest any resources that can guide me through all these useful commands. I will like to learn more about desktop management through console after this terrible experience. And in this time I have developed keen interest in working with bash. Any link to useful pdf or web page guide would be welcome.

I would also love to contribute to community in any way possible.

After all... Opensolaris forum rocks!

Thanks again.

This should change
$HOME/.gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/%gconf.xml,
replacing in the default property the string "/usr/bin/compiz" with
"/usr/bin/metacity".

What is in this file?
