The OpenSolaris development package repository

http://pkg.opensolaris.org/

has been updated to reflect the changes in snv_98 including major fixes
to the Caiman "Slim Install" and the Image Packaging System (IPS).

Users who wish to update their system to the development build can do
so using the "image-update" facility provided by the pkg(1) command.
For important information about "image-update", see the instructions at

http://opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/resources/rn3/image-update/

IMPORTANT NOTE: The development builds have undergone limited testing
and users should expect to uncover issues as the next release is
developed. Bug reports and requests for enhancement are welcome
through http://defect.opensolaris.org/

ISO images are being made available for this build via BitTorrent.
Torrent files are provided as follows

Primary Languages, gzip compression, 746MB
http://dlc.sun.com/torrents/info/osol-0811-98.iso.torrent
(if burned to media, image should be burned to a DVD)

All Languages, LZMA compression, 661MB
http://dlc.sun.com/torrents/info/osol-0811-98-global.iso.torrent
(if burned to media, image can be burned to a CD)

MD5 checksums for these images
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/files/md5sums_98.txt

The ISO images are also available for HTTP download from
http://www.genunix.org/

Updating an image using "pkg image-update" may fail with the
following error

OSError: [Errno 90] Number of symbolic links encountered during
path name traversal exceeds MAXSYMLINKS:
'/tmp/<some path>/var/svc/profile/inetd_generic.xml'

Work-around:

Remove /var/svc/profile/inetd_generic.xml and rerun the
"pkg image-update".

http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=2900

Using versions of the Adobe Flash Player plugin prior to
version 9.0.125.0 may cause Firefox to exit prematurely.

Work-around:

Install version 9.0.125.0 or greater of the plugin and
then restart Firefox.

http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6733880

When starting up, VirtualBox 1.6.6 or earlier terminates

Work-around:

Install VirtualBox 2.0.0

Alternatively, set the environment variable LD_NODIRECT

Ditto, tried it on three different OSOL boxes running b97. Worked like a charm.

I just did the upgrade on a machine that gave me fits when I upgraded from 95 to 97. The upgrade from 97 to 98 went very smooth. This was probably the easiest upgrade so far.

Image-Update from build 97 was flawless.

However, Build 98 seems to have power management problem. The fan keeps humming non-stop. Any comments?

I am running this particular instance of OpenSolaris in Vista under VBox 1.6.6.

The fan-humming problem seems to have gone away by switching to VBox 2.0.2 (thus, the problem doesn't seem to be directly related to build 98). However, the seamless mode is broken in VBox 2.0.2.

Has anyone run NetBeans and GlassFish on build 98? Please share your experience so we can all save unnecessary trials. Thanks.

I have subsequently discovered that there is NO problem running Build 98 in VBox 1.6.6.

The fan-humming problem (& power mis-management) was caused by my screwing up of the (virtual) USB device. (When I changed to 2.0.2, and b/f installing the Guest Addition, the virtual USB device was not activated.)

I have fixed the virtual USB connection in 1.6.6, and os0811_98 works great in Vista.

With OpenSolaris and VBox, we may finally have a chance of shattering the Windows tyranny once and for all, and secured communication accompanied by convenience of web surfing may no longer be just a dream. But we need more user experiences. Please contribute to this effort.

I did an update from 97 to 98 and it worked just by manually installing ips with pkg, and then pkg image-update. No problemo.

Upgraded from b95 to b98 on a Tecra M2, image-update went well
although when install latest SUNWips package shows some internal error
(see http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=3500).

Anyhow, the image-update finished successfully but failed to activate
the new BE, which is opensolaris-6. I set the bootfs property myself
and update grub menu accordingly to continue.

After reboot, the system try to boot into a AMD64 and complains
inconsistent filesystem structure.

CPU: 'GeniumIntel' family 6 model 13 step 6
amd64: CPU does NOT support long mode
amd64: CPU does NOT support PAE
amd64: CPU does NOT support PSE

Am I the only one seeing this? How do I correct it?

Cheers,
Henry

I'd file a bug on it at defect.opensolaris.org; it's the first I've seen.

If pkg is going to quit anyway if it detects that it is not up to date, it should at LEAST prompt to update itself and continue.

Updating from snv94 to snv98 i get an error "pkg: unable to activate opensolaris-98"... looks like the update from snv94 is still a problem.
