I have firefox 2.0.0.17 installed on my s10 box. Since you mention the
fact that this will be the latest 2.x version I assume this one is
better than 2.0.0.17?

2.0.0.19 has some security fixes, but it also does not include
Phishing Protection.

Basically, the minor release of Firefox/Thunderbird fixes some security
issues. For example, you can find the detail of the security
vulnerability in the 2.0.0.x releases:
http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox20.html.
2.0.0.19 has some security fixes to compare with 2.0.0.17. it's
recommended from Mozilla community to upgrade to the latest one. Please
also note that 2.0.0.20 only fixes one problem that Windows specific.

Cheers,
-Alfred

Currently, the tarball is only available for Firefox 3.0.5+GNOME 2.20
libraries on Solaris 10.

Hi Ken,

Sorry that I don't know of any plan to do so, at least for now. The
contributed builds might be available when 3.1 is released.

Hi Alfred,

I am having trouble with the new build of Firefox 3.0.5 for Solaris 10 11/06 sparc. I completely removed FX 3.0.4 and all associated libraries (SFWcairo, pango, glib2, etc.) I then installed everything in your 3.0.5 package.

When I try and run the new Firefox I get:

> ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: libpixman-1.so.0: open failed: No such file or directory
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: relocation error: file /opt/sfw/lib/libcairo.so.2: symbol pixman_region32_init: referenced symbol not found
Killed

[1] Exit 137 firefox

Is libpixman-1.so.0 is missing from your package? Here are cairo-related libs:

/opt/sfw/lib> ll *cairo*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Dec 23 07:51 libcairo.so.2 -> libcairo.so.2.10800.4
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1015012 Dec 15 21:22 libcairo.so.2.10800.4
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Dec 23 07:51 libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 -> libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.2203.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 87948 Dec 15 23:24 libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.2203.0

Do you know what is going on?

Thank you...

I'm replying to myself, but the libpixman problem was encountered using the FX 3.0.5 package

firefox-3.0.5.en-US.solaris-10-fcs-sparc-pkg

I removed everything associated with that package, and installed your "test" Gnome 2.24 package:

firefox-3.0.5.en-US.solaris-10-fcs-sparc-gnome-2-24-pkg

and everything seems to work fine.

It seems that FX 3.0.5 compiled on Gnome 2.20 requires the pixman lib, which is only available with in the package with Gnome 2.24. The pixman libs are not included in the FX 3.0.5 package for Gnome 2.20.

Thanks for pointing this out. I made a mistake to mix the 2.20 libraries
with the 2.24 ones. The pixman lib is required by cairo in GNOME 2.24.
Will have an updated one ready soon.

Hi Alfred,

Welcome back from vacation! Are you going to update the main FX 3.0.5 sparc package? If so, could you let us know when you've done it?

Thanks

Do you plan to update Firefox to 3.0.5 in the OpenSolaris /release

When I follow the link for Thunderbird 3.0b1, there are two directories: pkgadd and tarball. Which do I download from? How do I install the new version of Thunderbird once it is downloaded?

Mark,

Two formats are usually provided for the contributed builds, pkgadd and
tarball. You can choose either one for your convenience.

For pkgadd format, you need to run (as root):
% bunzip *pkg.bz2
% pkgadd -d *pkg

The binary will be installed to /opt/sfw directory. Then run
/opt/sfw/bin/thunderbird as normal user should launch it.

For tarball format, you just need to run (normal user is fine):
% /usr/sfw/bin/gtar jxvf *.tar.bz2

Then run "./thunderbird/thunderbird" should start it.

Hope this helpful,
-Alfred

I tried installing the S10/GNOME 2.2.4 pkg and I get a hang when trying to print rather than the dialog box asking whether to print to a file or LPR.

Is there a way around this? For the moment I've reverted to 3.0.4.

How many files are in /opt/sfw/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/printbackends/? Should
be only libprintbackend-file.so and libprintbackend-lpr.so. Please
remove the extra ones if exist.

That's what I get for responding without checking for new files on the FTP site.

Printing works fine from the version in the Solaris 10 tarball firefox-3.0.5.en-US.solaris-10-fcs-i386.tar.bz2.

Good work!

I've installed 3.1b2 and it only crashes for the first startup. Then it
runs well as 3.0.4 till now, except for some add-on compatibility
issues.

Thanks!

Does Firefox crash with a newly created profile? Would you mind to share
the core stack here? Maybe someone will be interested in taking a look
at it.

BTW, one way to hack the add-on compatibility is to create a new key in
"about:config": extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false. This
will skip the add-on compatibility check, and it might introduce some
instability for your browser as some add-ons don't work well with 3.1
release. Anyway, I did the trick and the add-ons I have works fine (I'm
not a heavy add-ons user).

Thanks,
-Alfred

Sorry to hook in on this thread. FF-2.0.0.19 on my Solaris10 box
crashes randomly. I get the feeling it always happens on flash enabled
sites. I use the latest flash on S10U6 and your FF-2.0.0.19 build.

My question is: would FF-3.0.5 be more stable with Flash sites or
wouldn't you know? Would it help to disable the DOM inspector or does
this do no "harm"

On my sxce104 box these crashes never occur. Same flash; newer FF;
newer java.

I really would like firefox more stable on my S10 box too. Disabling
flash is no option. Any suggestions? FF@? F****

Thanks for this Alfred. However with FF 3.0.5 for Solaris 10 Sparc, once you get past the pixman issue (I did by installng pixman) there's also a printing problem. FF is looking for cups when trying to print but there's no cups by default on Solaris 10 so FF crashes.
ie
bash-3.00$ /opt/sfw/bin/firefox
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: libcups.so.2: open failed: No such file or director y
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: relocation error: file /opt/sfw/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/ printbackends/libprintbackend-cups.so: symbol cupsServer: referenced symbol not found
Killed
bash-3.00$

Hopefully it stays that way. I'm no fan of cups. The good old *NIX way
of printing still works fine here. As an option..fine. But no more.

an ugly hack to work around this CUPS issue is to rename libprintbackend-cups.so

# cd /opt/sfw/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/printbackends/
# mv libprintbackend-cups.so libprintbackend-cups.so.orig
#

Printing then reverts to lpr. It's probably good to have libprintbackend-cups.so for those that DO have CUPS installed.

Cheers

PS. Thanks again Alfred. I love your work.

Hi Peter,

I did some experimental work to support CUPS lately for Firefox
3.0.5+GNOME 2.20 libraries. The test on my Solaris 10 box here seemed to
be fine without cups installed. Apparently, it doesn't work for all the
cases. So I'd remove this in the updated binaries. Anyone has concern
for this, please let me know.

Cheers,
-Alfred

Hi Peter,

Were you using the GNOME 2.24 contrib (from http://releases.mozilla.com/sun/solaris10/3.0.5/) or the 2.20 contrib (http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0.5/contrib/) when you encountered this error?

Thanks,
William Yang

Just curious as to how libprintbackend-cups.so got build for S10?
This is only get build if libcups.so is on the build system. While I
have never tried, I suspect it may need a certain version of libcups
(later than 1.2) for it to work.

May be Alfred can build without cups for s10.

The CUPS support has been removed from the latest Firefox 3.0.5
contributed builds.

FYI, Thunderbird 3.0b1 contributed builds have been re-uploaded to
include the Lightning 1.0pre for Calendar.

On s10u4 I have not been able to select any printer with any of the 3.0.5 builds.

With firefox 2.0 we had exported
MOZILLA_POSTSCRIPT_PRINTER_LIST=`tr "," " " <$HOME/.

Hi Karl,

There are several papi bugs for Solaris 10U4 which causes Firefox 3.0.x
to hang/crash when invoking the printing part. That's the main reason
that we disable the papi backend for GTK of the contributed builds.
Sorry that there is no work around for this problem. A possible choice
is to upgrade your system to the latest Solaris 10 update (U6?) which
might contain the fixes for the papi bugs. I can provide a separated
papi backend for you to try out.

Thanks,
-Alfred

Alfred,

Thank you for providing the mozilla contrib builds of Firefox.

I have 20 sunray servers with s10u4 installed. We would like to deploy FF 3.1 on those servers in order to use jit. I realize that there are currently only OpenSolaris releases of FF 3.1. SXCE is looking more attractive all the time.

I would like to confirm that the papi bugs have been fixed. So far, I haven't been able to find errata for papi for S10u6 or any patches that could be applied to fix the problem(s) on sunsolve.

I have cc'ed the printing community in order to help shed some light.

Karl

Hi Karl,

Are those SunRay servers x86 or SPARC? As I know, the JIT feature is
available on x86, but not SPARC.

I don't have idea on which patch contains the fix for bug
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6734747 (or others?).
Hope that the printing expert can give some insight as well.

Thanks,
-Alfred

This bug is closed as a dup of 6724379 which was fixed in nevada
96. root cause is memory corruption.
Though the evaluator claimed that the bug is not reproduce able on
S10U7 which is not shipped yet.
So the best bit to try on s10 is to use S10 U6.
