Hi, guys.

Below is the beginning of an outline of OpenSolaris accomplishments for
the first year. Congratulations! It's been an amazing year. Please feel
free to use this info for any reason -- blog material, press/analyst
interviews, background for slides, or just to look at. I just wanted to
have a document that attempts to remind us of all the good things we've
all done this year as we approach our anniversary on Wednesday.

Feel free to add to this or correct my mistakes, too. I'm sure I'm
missing a lot of great material ...

Jim

OpenSolaris at One

CODE RELEASES

Context: The code for Solaris is being opened in stages. It all started
with DTrace on 1/25/05, then the main OS/Net (ON) release came on
6/14/05, and we've been opening code ever since. We have plans to open
more, but here's a list of the bits we have released since we launched
last year:

* Main OpenSolaris launch: OS/Net Consolidation 6/14/05
* Source released since the main launch:
* JDS Consolidation: 10/28/05
* DevPro Consolidation: 11/10/05: SCCS, make (binaries)
* OpenGrok Project: 11/15/05
* ZFS Project: 11/16/05 -- integrated into ON build 27
* BrandZ Project: 12/13/05
* JDS Consolidation: 12/23/05
* Network Storage Consolidation: 1/27/06
* DevPro Consolidation: 2/22/06 libm
* DevPro Consolidation: 2/28/06 libmtsk (binaries)
* Install Consolidation: 3/6/06 packaging tools
* SFW Consolidation: 3/28/06
* Documentation Consolidation: 3/31/06 2 manuals
* X Window System Consolidation: 3/31/06
* Globalization Consolidation 5/12/06
* Documentation Consolidation: 5/31/06 2 manuals
* Total number of Solaris consolidations opened the first year: 9
* Roadmap for future releases: http://opensolaris.org/os/about/roadmap/
* Download center: http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/

CONVERSATIONS

Context: The level of conversations on the OpenSolaris mail lists has
grown consistently throughout the year.

* 115 Jive web discussion forums: http://opensolaris.org/jive/index.jspa
* Total views to the Jive web forums: 4 million
* Total unique visitors to the web forums: 2 million
* During the last month of the year, we broke records each week for
unique visitors to the forums.

MEMBERSHIP

Context: The OpenSolaris community is global, so it's difficult to
quantify the exact size of the community considering that new sites are
opening that are not necessarily tied to the main site. However,
opensolaris.org is certainly the largest OpenSolaris website, and the
community that participants there is known.

* 14,000 members signed up to opensolaris.org
* Metrics: http://opensolaris.org/os/community/marketing/metrics/latest/

USER GROUPS / COMMUNITIES / PROJECTS

Context: We started out with a handful of communities and no user
groups. Within days of the launch last year, new user groups and
communities began to form. And when the site was able to support
projects, they started forming consistently as well. Over time, the
number of projects will increase and some of the communities will become
projects.

* User groups: 29 http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/
* Communities: 40 http://opensolaris.org/os/communities/
* Projects: 30 http://opensolaris.org/os/projects/

INFRASTRUCTURE

Context: We are creating an OpenSolaris development infrastructure, and
this process has been discussed and planned openly. Our goal is open
development and full transparency. Two Source Code Management (SCM)
systems -- Subversion (centralized) and Mercurial (distributed) -- will
be supported on the website.

* SCM tools discussion:
https://opensolaris.org/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=9
* SCM for OpenSolaris:
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/tools/scm/

GOVERNANCE & OPEN DEVELOPMENT PROCESSES

Context: The OpenSolaris Community Advisory Board (CAB) was formed
before the project was opened. The board consulted with community
members and Solaris engineers regarding the OpenSolaris Charter and the
OpenSolaris Constitution. These governance conversations have all taken
place in the open, and the process is still underway. Additionally, a
team of Solaris engineers and members of the CAB met regularly to
outline a draft OpenSolaris Development Process, which is published as well.

* OpenSolaris Charter (approved)
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/cab/charter/
* OpenSolaris Constitution (draft)
http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/OpenSolaris_Governance_Draft_01
* Open Development Process (draft)
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/onnv/os_dev_process/

CONTRIBUTIONS

Context: People are contributing to the OpenSolaris community in a
variety of ways, such as: answering questions on list, blogging, doing
press/analyst interviews, creating artwork, doing podcasts and
screencasts, setting up and leading communities/projects, reporting
bugs, writing documentation and articles and books, aggregating
community news, quantifying mail list activity, offering code and
scripts. Contributions are being tracked monthly in the OpenSolaris
Newsletter http://opensolaris.org/os/project/content/newsletter/

Here is a summary of request-sponsor code contributions:

* request-sponsor blew away all predictions for code contributions
* 33 Solaris engineers working the request-sponsor process:
http://opensolaris.org/community/onnv/crt/becoming-a-sponsor
* 26 non-Sun contributors
* 80 sponsored putbacks (with the first putback 2 weeks after launch),
41 submissions with sponsors assigned and in process, 18 submissions
awaiting sponsor, and 31 submissions closed or suspended:
http://opensolaris.org/os/bug_reports/request_sponsor/
* 2 ARC cases completed (and 2 in the queue):
http://opensolaris.org/os/bug_reports/arc_table
* 421 bugs reported and 170 code submissions:
http://opensolaris.org/os/bug_reports/

PORTS AND DISTRIBUTIONS

Context: We licensed OpenSolaris to encourage community members to take
the code and do interesting things with it. And they certainly have:

* Five Distributions: SXCR, Schillix, Belenix, Nexenta, marTux
http://opensolaris.org/os/about/distributions/
* DTrace port to BSD:
http://blogs.sun.com/bmc?entry=dtrace_on_freebsd_update
* ZFS ports to FUSE/Linux and BSD

* OpenSolaris port to PowerPC:
http://blastware.org/
* OpenSolaris (Nevada build 36) on the Intel iMac:
http://blogs.sun.com/setje?entry=solaris_on_the_imac

EXTERNAL OPINION

Context: The news coverage of OpenSolaris has increased dramatically
over the year, and the credit goes to the engineers who wrote the code
and to everyone who has been out there talking about the code. Below are
some links to track press coverage.

* Delicious links: http://del.icio.us/tag/opensolaris
* OpenSolaris News: http://opensolaris.org/os/news/

EVANGELISM

Context: Hundreds of community members have evangelized OpenSolaris
around the world all year long -- attending user groups and running
sessions and BOFs at conferences.

* FISL, OSCON, LinuxWorld, Lisa/Usenix, ApacheCon, JavaOne, MySQL,
OSBC, FOSS.IN, GUADEC ....

EDUCATION

Context: OpenSolaris is going back to the school in China with 19
universities planning to use the technology in academic programs next year.

Actually, there are currently 32 universities worldwide that are using OpenSolaris in their curriculum. There are also 5 Centers of Excellence: Dartmouth, Northwestern, University of Queensland, Tsinghua University, and Peking University.

I hadn't realized the number was that high already. We're obviously making progress ... :) Jim _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss at opensolaris dot org

Jim, a little correction - a canonical URL for PPC port is
http://polaris.blastwaVe.org

I have to clean things up a bit clearly ... a simple change in the DNS will
fix things.
