Using OpenSolarisIf you want to run a distribution based on OpenSolaris, choose one of these available options:
FTP & BitTorrent:OpenSolaris 2008.11 Development Builds Development builds are being released on a bi-weekly basis for work towards the next release of OpenSolaris, 2008.11. These updates have undergone limited testing, and thus may contain instabilities, and thus not recommended for inexperienced users. It is possible to update to these from an existing 2008.05 install using the pkg image-update command - please refer to the announcement for details of how to update. Additionally, torrents and ISO images are also available for those wanting to install the latest development base rather than upgrade from an existing install.Solaris Express Community Edition – CD | DVD | DVD (Single Image) Solaris Express Community Edition is Sun's binary release for OpenSolaris developers (code named "Nevada"). It is built from the latest OpenSolaris source and additional technology that has not been published in the OpenSolaris source base. This release is unsupported. Developers can build the OpenSolaris source by using this release as the base system. It is usually updated every other Friday and its release is announced on the OpenSolaris announce forum.BeleniX – Download | More Info BeleniX is a *NIX distribution that is built using the OpenSolaris source base. It is currently a LiveCD distribution but is intended to grow into a complete distro that can be installed to hard disk.MartUX mBE – Download | More Info | More Info x64/x86 MartUX BlastwaRe Edition is the first non-SXCR OpenSolaris distribution that is available both for SPARC and for x64/x86. It is currently available as LiveDVD, co-bundled with tons of useful CommunitySoftWare packages in /opt/csw.NexentaOS – Download | More Info NexentaOS is a complete GNU-based free and open source operating system built on top of the OpenSolaris kernel and runtime. NexentaOS integrates OpenSolaris (SunOS kernel) and Open Source Software (OSS) applications a foundation that combines the best of both worlds.SchilliX – Download | More Info SchilliX is an OpenSolaris based UNIX Live CD and distribution for the x86, x64 and EM64T architectures. The current release is based on Nevada Build 17 and higher.MilaX – Download | More Info MilaX is a small size Live CD distribution which runs completely off a CD or a USB pendrive. It is based on Solaris Nevada and includes its basic features. MilaX may also be used as a Rescue-CD. Learning OpenSolarisThe OpenSolaris project has created a Starter Kit for developers who want to learn how to install, boot and run OpenSolaris. The Starter Kit includes a comparison of OpenSolaris to other operating systems. Building OpenSolarisMany different software components comprise the OpenSolaris project. Major components are referred to as "consolidations". Pointers to available consolidations are listed on this page. Information about consolidation source currently not available can be found on the No Source page. To build OpenSolaris from the source, you first need to install a suitable OpenSolaris distribution, which at this time is limited to the Solaris Express Community Release (above). OpenSolaris ConsolidationsThe Operating System/Networking (ON) consolidation forms the base system support for OpenSolaris. Operating System/Networking (ON)ON includes the kernel, networking services and system libraries and commands.
