HA Clusters Quick Links
OverviewHigh-Availability (HA) Clusters are a class of tightly-coupled distributed systems that provide high availability of services through hardware and software monitoring and hardware redundancy. HA Clusters are often closely associated with the underlying operating system, and in many cases can be considered extensions of the OS. The focus of this community is implementations, ideas, innovations, and research around high-availability clusters on the OpenSolaris platform. This scope includes, but is not limited to, areas such as core technologies (eg. membership, quorum, filesystems), APIs, system administration, application support code (agents), and test frameworks. Although the focus is on clusters for high-availability, as opposed to HPC clusters, grids, or other cluster technologies, we recognize that there is often overlap between the technologies for different kinds of clusters, and will not discourage fruitful conversations and projects as long as they relate to high availability. The HA Clusters community is the home of Open High Availability Cluster, the open-source code base of Solaris Cluster, a high availability (HA) clustering solution from Sun Microsystems, Inc. German newsticker (Heise Verlag) about Sun releasing the first version of Solaris Cluster Express.
Two years after it first offered open source code for Solaris, Sun Wednesday said it would open source the cluster technology for the operating system.
On Wednesday, Sun Microsystems began releasing its Solaris Cluster code to the open source community, reports vnunet.
Sun Microsystems, Inc. has announced it will release the Solaris Cluster source code through the HA (High Availability) Clusters community on the OpenSolaris site.
High availability clustering technology has long been the domain of expensive, proprietary systems. Sun Microsystems (Quote) may well be changing that; the systems vendor will open source its Open HA (High Availability) Cluster code to Sun's OpenSolaris community in stages over the next 18 months.
