Solaris CIFS, aka "Native Samba" at September LOSUG

CIFS (Common Internet Filesystem, or SMB (Server Message Block)) is what many know as the "Microsoft Windows Network". Although Samba provides much of this functionality, it is poorly integrated with the operating system, especially in the area of file I/O, identity management and access control.

Solaris CIFS delivers a native, well integrated CIFS service offering ubiquitous access to files shared between CIFS and NFS clients, transparent identity management, and scalable high performance.

This months LOSUG talk will outline the architecture of the implementation, covering some of the core internal changes made to Solaris to accommodate a native CIFS server and will feature some live demos.

LOSUG, June 18th: Trusted Extensions

Enabling Trusted Extensions (TX) on an OpenSolaris system activates a different (than standard) security policy: one that permits controlling access to data, based on its sensitivity.

This feature builds on a set of standard Solaris components – zones, privileges & the GNOME desktop – so the building blocks are well-known. What TX permits is less widely understood. In this talk Bart Blanquart, Sun Security Ambassador will look at how TX does the things it does… and what it allows an administrator to achieve.

Advances in OpenSolaris Network Administration at LOSUG January 16th 2008

Firstly, we would like to wish you all a Very Happy 2008!

Secondly, we would like to thank very much Isamu and James for excellent December LOSUG presos.

Now for the New Year; CIFS has been put back a little, but…..

For sometime network administration on Solaris has been perhaps harder than it should be and harder than it is on other platforms. This month's presentation covers the recent projects that have been undertaken to address this problem making OpenSolaris a more compelling platform for developers, administrators and users. The projects that this presentation covers are:

  • NWAM (Network auto magic) – Making network configuration easier
  • Clearview – Providing a uniform set of features across all network interfaces
  • Brussels – Simplifying NIC configuration and tuning
  • Crossbow – NIC virtualisation and resource management

The speaker for this month is Phil Kirk. Phil has worked at Sun for the past 11 years. He currently works in the sustaining organisation supporting networking products. He has also been working on the Clearview project team, designing and implementing the IP observability component.

Two for the price of one at the December 19th LOSUG!

As a special Christmas treat, we have two speakers at next month's LOSUG meeting.

James MacFarlane, a Sun Staff Engineer will take a look at the recently integrated Solaris 8 Migration Assistant. The session will consist of an overview and demonstration of the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant, which builds on the Branded Zones feature of Solaris to provide an environment to run Solaris 8 applications on top of new hardware and Solaris versions.

Our second speaker is Isamu Shigemori, a Solaris Utilities and Libraries Sustaining Engineer. Isamu suffers from Cerebral Palsy which among other symptoms impedes speech. He recently developed a command which uses the speech synthesiser library within the Java Desktop Environment screen reader for the visually impaired to aid people with a speech impediment. Isamu's short presentation will outline this tiny command and demonstrate the possible applications using the command.

We are fortunate to have another top presenter – Chris Beal, who will be covering OpenSolaris projects such as Zones, BrandZ, Xen, and Crossbow. Should be a fab evening!

Given the proximity of Christmas, some themed fayre should be on the table…

The venue again will be the Sun Customer Briefing Centre, 45 King William Street, London, EC4R 9AD. Nearest underground station is Monument. The timing again is nominally from 18:00 to 20:00.

Once again, if you would like to attend (or attend again), it would be great if you could please send an email ASAP to confirm your attendance to Sean Sprague.

We hope to see you there!

Thanks and regards… Sean Sprague.

November OpenSolaris User Group Meeting 15th November 2006

Topic for the meeting will be FMA

Firstly I would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended the last meeting. The turnout was excellent, and I hope that everyone found the presentation interesting and informative. My thanks go to Darren J. Moffat for being a star presenter.

Please accept my apologies for lack of contact since the presentation, but a serious neurological problem affecting my young son rather took precedence…

Anyways, we are in luck once again to have a top presenter for the November meeting. This time it will be Gavin Maltby; and he will be presenting on FMA. Gavin is well known throughout the Solaris community for being a techie's techie, and regularly eats three TLB's for breakfast.

The venue again will be the Sun Customer Briefing Centre, 45 King William Street, London, EC4R 9AD. Nearest underground station is Monument. The timing again is nominally from 18:00 to 20:00. We will try to kick off at 18:15 promptly this time ;-)

Once again, if you would like to attend (or attend again), it would be great if you could please send an email ASAP to confirm your attendance to Sean Sprague.

We hope to see you there!

Thanks and regards… Sean Sprague.

Next ("Renaissance") Meeting: 18th October 2006 !!!

Topic for the meeting will be "OpenSolaris Security With a Close Eye on RBAC"

The London OpenSolaris User Group has been rather quiet for some time… but now we are back!

As with previous meetings, the venue remains the Sun Customer Briefing Centre, 45 King William Street, London, EC4R 9AD; and the timing nominally from 18:00 to 20:00.

On this occasion, we are very grateful indeed to have been able to enlist the services of Darren J. Moffat; who will present on OpenSolaris Security, leading into a deeper discussion on RBAC. On completion of the formal preso, there will be a Q&A session. Thereafter, as is customary, we will probably adjourn to a local hostelry to sample their wares.

In order to get a flavour for numbers, it would be great if you could please send an email ASAP to confirm your attendance to Sean Sprague. The catering will not be lavish, but we will have some beers available during the event, in order to stave off the pangs of thirst ;-)

The following meeting will be on 15th November 2006 at the same venue. If you have any suggestions for future presos, or if you have any thoughts or comments at all, please post a message at London Open Solaris User Group (LOSUG) General Discussion forum

Hope to see you on 18th October!

Regards… Sean Sprague.

2nd Meeting: 19th December 2005

The Xmas L-OSUG is upon us! Given that Christmas is rapidly approaching, there WILL be plenty of mince pies and mulled wine etc on offer ;-) and if that isn't enough, we will adjourn afterwards to a local watering-hole for further refreshment.

Work in Progress / Lightning Talk

The work in progress/lightning talk sessions are an opportunity to give a quick overview of something interesting you have done, are doing or think would be cool involving Solaris. Try to keep it technical – the crowd should feel free to heckle, shout down an out-and-out sales pitch!

[1] Thx to Alan Burlison who pointed out the term "Lightning Talk" in the L-OSUG thread and also pointed us to the "definition" of LT and how to give a LT

If you want to use a couple of slides to assist, please make them available the week before the meeting so that we can gather them all together.
