Virtual Router

One thing that can be done with OpenSolaris today is configure Solaris to be a virtual router using Solaris Containers/Zones and Quagga. And with the Crossbow project one can also apply network resource controls to further the virtualization aspects of Virtual Network Machines. But that is merely the starting point for this project.

As an example, a pre-configured BGP/OSPF firewall edge router component is being shaped on the network virtual machine concept that will provide an example LiveCD image, to be deployed on bare metal instances. The integration scripts (relatively straightforwarded and provided as examples) will prompt for a set of network interfaces and proceed to configure the node as a functioning router.

This appliance example is meant to be modified, augmented, and edited. When deemed satisfactory, it can be persistently installed on any available boot drive on the system.

This LiveCD configures the appliance diagrammed here and requires the following minimal hardware configuration:

  • Niagara or x86 system
  • Minimum of three network interface adapters (one external, the rest internal)
  • DVD player
  • 4GB memory

Release expected Fall, 2007.
